Not only will your self-confidence in your skills and knowledge improve, but you’ll be giving back to the community in a meaningful way. An IT internship at Bremerton Housing Authority will help you learn the art of helping end users, administering computer networks, managing computer security and updating hardware and software, at the same time as assisting and empowering low income participants with their computer training needs.
 
Position Overview:
 
Under the direction of the Housing Director and the Community Resources Coordinator, the Computer Lab Technician Intern supports the development and implementation of employment readiness training programs for eligible affordable housing and Public Housing tenants to create and meet self-sufficiency goals. Responsibilities include but are not limited to; coordinating services and resources for the Computer Lab Learning Center;  teaching participants how to build computers using existing hardware, maintaining and updating hardware, software and networking. 
 
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  1. Education:  Working on Associates or Bachelors degree in information technology, or related field - receiving school credit for the internship is required.
  2. Candidates with working knowledge of computer systems technology and/or a specific understanding of Cisco network systems will receive greater consideration.
  3. Must pass a background check indicative to the position requirements and in accordance with RCW 43.43.830-43.43.845.
 
Required Key Competencies:
 
  1. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, outside vendors, consultants, and clients.
  2. Must have the ability to organize and establish priorities for work and effectively implement the priorities and instructions of the Community Resources Coordinators
  3. Must be able to demonstrate strong leadership and project management skills to effectively oversee computer lab or computer training programs.
  4. Must be able to demonstrate strong analytical problem solving skills.
  5. Must have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with a wide variety of audiences.
  6. Must have good knowledge pertaining to computer hardware and have the ability to teach these concepts to others who may not understand computer technology.
  7. Must have basic knowledge pertaining to network infrastructure and client server application environments and/or have the ability to obtain resources needed in this area.
  8. Must be fluent in the use of Microsoft Office products including of a variety of data processing and spreadsheet software as well as web browsers and basic office machinery;
  9. Must have the ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local requirements, laws, policies, regulations, and procedures as applicable to computer programs and reports.
  
Essential Duties: 
 
  1. Train Participants How to Build Computers
    • Develop lesson plans and training materials pertaining to how to build a computer
    • Present training, facilitate hands-on learning, and monitor progress of participants
  2. Coordinate activities of the Computer Lab Learning Center
    • Track and maintain records of participants.
    • Maintain computer equipment and software or assist volunteers/interns who are fulfilling this task.
  3. Work with community partners to establish training and social opportunities for low income clients
    • Help coordinate supportive services programs with BHA community partners.
    • Help monitor expenditures against grant funds authorized as needed
  4. Help teach basic job skills to Program Participants utilizing the Computer Lab such as using MS Office products, internet-job search sites, etc.

This is primarily an office position with the opportunity to move about at will.  Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate various pieces of office equipment.  .  Employee will occasionally need to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.  Employee may be exposed to noise from basic office machine operation.  The work environment is fast-paced and moderately noisy.  There may be exposure to hostile clients or clients who may have difficulty with basic life skills or have trouble communicating.
